Gorging on Scenery Along the Pine Creek Rail Trail

Pine Creek Rail Trail

Distance: 63 Miles

Ride With GPS Map

The Pine Creek Rail Trail runs 63 miles through north-central Pennsylvania, tracing the Pine Creek Gorge—often called the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.” Built along a former railroad corridor, it now serves as one of the state’s most scenic long-distance routes, blending mountain views, river valley calm, and small-town charm.

Smooth gravel, well-maintained

The trail begins near Wellsboro, where the creek winds through wide meadows before narrowing into the wooded canyon. From there, it follows a gentle downhill grade southward through Tioga and Lycoming Counties. The surface is finely crushed gravel—smooth, firm, and well-maintained.

In the early miles, riders travel close to the creek, shaded by hemlock and hardwood forest. The gorge walls rise dramatically on either side, and wooden bridges cross quiet tributaries. As the route continues, the forest gives way to open farmland, small villages, and broad views of the surrounding ridges.

Plenty of amenities

Trailheads with parking and restrooms are regularly spaced on this Pennsylvania bike trail, including at points near Ansonia, Blackwell, and Waterville. Small cafes and country stores can be found in the nearby towns, making it easy to refuel or pause along the way.

A light rain may dampen the gravel, but rarely makes the trail impassable. Spring and fall bring the best conditions, with lush greenery in May and brilliant foliage in October, while summer rides reward with long daylight and cool shade beneath the trees.

From Wellsboro’s start to the quiet stretches near Jersey Shore, the Pine Creek Rail Trail is a ride that moves seamlessly from town to wilderness and back again, creating a journey that feels both remote and remarkably accessible.

You can take it with you - in a great set of panniers!
