Where the Prairie Meets Culture on Wyoming's Platt River Trails

Platte River Trails

Distance: 10 miles

Map

Wyoming is better known for wide-open ranges and rugged mountains than paved bike trails, but it does have the Platte River Trails around Casper. This system covers more than 10 miles of paved paths along the North Platte River and provides a nice ramble through city and open landscapes.

Cruise through Casper

The route follows the river through downtown Casper, city parks, and fishing areas, with bridges crossing the water at several points. Parking is available at Morad Park, the Tate Pumphouse, and multiple trailheads along the way. Many riders begin at the Tate Pumphouse, where the path is easy to access, and head either east or west for an out-and-back ride.

The trail surface is mostly asphalt in good condition. The grade is gentle, following the riverbank. Clear signage helps with navigation, and benches are spaced along the way if you need a break.

In town, the trail runs beside businesses and neighborhoods, then opens onto views of the prairie with the Laramie Mountains on the horizon. The river is always there, often busy with anglers, and it attracts deer, waterfowl, and other wildlife. Morad Park and Amoco Park give riders green spaces to stop, picnic, or kill a little time before continuing on.

The system also links to cultural stops. The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center is close to the route and offers a deeper look at the Oregon, Mormon, and Pony Express trails that once passed through the area.

A few drawbacks

There are limitations. At just over 10 miles, the Platte River Trails do not provide the distance of a long tour, and strong winds around Casper can make even flat miles demanding. Some stretches near downtown attract heavy use by walkers and joggers, especially on weekends, which slows the pace. And while parts of the path feel natural, the trail never leaves the city environment behind. Riders will encounter traffic noise, nearby roads, and development along the way.

Even with these drawbacks, the Platte River Trails are a reliable place to put in miles on pavement in Wyoming. They combine river views, city access, and prairie scenery in a way that reflects the character of central Wyoming. For anyone passing through Casper, it is an easy ride to reach and a good way to connect with the landscape while staying close to town.
